Used Fadal Vertical Machining Centers [VMC]
Looking for a Fadal mill to fit your specifications and your budget? Then look no further! CNCMachines.Net may have just the right used Fadal VMC for you.
Fadal is a manufacturer of CNC driven Vertical Machining Centers that prides itself on being “for machinists, by machinists”. The company debuted its first CNC machine in 1980 and was a leader in the production of Vertical Machining Centers before closing its doors in 2008. In 2014, partnering with Merrill Technologies Group, it came back and launched the newest versions of the classic series, the VMC2516, VMC3016, VMC4020, VMC6030 and VMC8030. Fadal offers CNC machines at reasonable prices, incorporating both vertical machining centers and horizontal CNC lathes. The goal of the new Fadal was to “..bring back to market an easy to use CNC machine tool of sound design and state-of-the-art technology.”, according to Tim Consalvi, the director of sales, according to the press release issued July 17, 2014.
What Controllers Come on a Used Fadal VMC?
The process controllers evolved with the machines and were named the 1400-X, CNC88, CNC88HS, CNC32MP, CNCMP and CNC Multi-Processor. The early VMC45 and VMC40 had the processor called the 1400-1 and was based on Intel 8080. As the Intel processors improved, Fadal added increasing dash numbers to the 1400. The memory in the Fadal VMC was used to store the CNC part program, tool data, fixture offset data, SETP parameters and backlash. The CNC88 was based on Intel 8088 processors. and in later versions, the MP referred to “Multiple Processors” since it better described the architecture of many CPU’s working at the same time. The MP controllers improved the speed of the loop position of each axis – down to 1 millisecond intervals. If purchasing a machine with an old processor, it is helpful to know that old controllers on a used Fadal VMC may be replaced with new controllers in some cases.
The Fadal VMC 64MP CNC Controller
The controller released on newer machines is the Fadal 64MP CNC Controller. This controller was introduced in 2014 and functions with the same language and compatibility of the legacy controllers – but with greater processing power and speed. This improved accuracy while keeping simplicity and a price-point that customer prefer. Features on the Fadal 64MP CNC Controller include
- 15” LCD Color display
- 2,000 blocks/second high speed processor
- 256 Mb parts program storage
- Programming formats
- ISO standard
- Simple conversational programming
- Auto routines
- User definable macros
- Networking (1 ethernet port)
- Spindle and axis load meters
- USP (2 ports)
- Auto routines
- Feed rate and spindle override dials
- 99 tool weal offsets
- Backlash compensation
- Pitch error compensation
- Rigid tapping
- Canned cycle

How to Interpret the Model Numbers of a Fadal VMC
The first two digits refer to the X-axis number of inches travel, and the next two digits refer to the Y-axis number of inches travel. Numerous models have been released, so this is not a comprehensive list, but it does provide an idea of how the Fadal machines have been named over the years and the sizes available.
Note: there are many other things to consider besides travel, spindle speed, and tool capacity when deciding which Fadal CNC is best for your application. Always read the technical specifications to compare specific machines.

Fadal VMC Options (From 2006)
- Chip Conveyor: A variable speed chip conveyor with direct-drive that moves chips to a standard 55-gallon drum. Speed can be adjusted independent from the CNC to match the metal removal rates.
- Chip Wash-Down and Auger: The system washes chips to the front of the machine, and the chip auger moves the chips out of the CNC to the 55-gallon drum.
- Dual Arm ATC: A used Fadal VMC with the dual arm ATC is an option for standard series VMCS with a Y-axis travel of 20” or greater. The dual arm improves the tool change performance.
- In-Process Measurement Probing: Touch probes can allow for measuring to improve the time it takes to set up and run parts.
